13:20 – Kingston Rock

This handicap hurdle for conditional jockeys isn’t as competitive as the numbers suggest. Gary Rutherford’s KINGSTON ROCK is taken to build on his good fifth at Newcastle behind Mister Smarty last time out and get off the mark.

Always A Reason could emerge as the chief threat on his handicap debut, with in-form Irish raider Bishbashbosh, in the frame in big fields in his last three starts, also firmly in the picture. Wee Alki completes the shortlist.

13:50 – Butch

Having impressed with his accurate jumping on his successful chase debut for Olly Murphy at Leicester, BUTCH should have little trouble following up here before going on to better things.

Shomen Uchi has been absent for the best part of two years, but he looked promising in bumpers/over hurdles when last seen.

Lunar Discovery didn’t do much wrong on her second chase start at Ayr, but she lacks the potential of the aforementioned rivals.

14:20 – Saint Malinas

This looks a decent chance for winning pointer SAINT MALINAS to build on his promising start over hurdles for Pauline Robson when second to Joecooker at Hexham in December.

If a recent breathing operation helps Malicash to recapture the form he showed when second to Junker d’Allier here in the autumn, he could pose the main threat ahead of See A Stride, who has performed respectably in a couple of handicaps at Musselburgh for her new yard.

14:50 – Tanganyika

Venetia Williams’ TANGANYIKA built on the promise of his chasing debut when winning readily on his third start over fences at Market Rasen earlier in the month, getting the better of a progressive type in Heard That, and he can follow up with further improvement to come.

Fortunate Man, a winner at Aintree on Boxing Day, has also made a positive start to his chasing career and is respected, with last month’s Wetherby winner Geryville the pick of the remainder.

15:20 – Joltin N Jiving

Donald McCain’s JOLTIN N JIVING can make the most of the 12 lb he receives from Pigeon House and strike at the second time of asking over hurdles after shaping well when second at Bangor.

Pigeon House is penalised for a couple of wins in Ireland earlier in the season, but the drop back in trip is in his favour.

At the same time, Kahavari won in France and could also play a prominent role on his British debut for Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero.

15:55 – Mavis Pike

MAVIS PIKE looks the most solid option in this mares’ handicap hurdle for Nigel Twiston-Davies, having knuckled down to defeat the well-fancied Kalif d’Airy at Fakenham on her latest outing.

She can follow up that victory at the expense of handicap debutant Reel Rosie whose trainer Jennie Candlish is in great form.

Lady Babs may have to settle for minor honours away from Market Rasen, where she was recently successful for a fourth time.

16:30 – Tommy Combats

Martin Todhunter’s progressive novice TOMMY COMBATS has yet to race at much beyond two miles over fences but has stayed further over hurdles and can resume winning ways upped in trip.

Catch Catchfire is also on the upgrade, making it two out of three over fences at Sedgefield last time and rates a big threat, with Diamond Dice also feared having pulled clear of the rest when a good second to Filanderer on his chase debut at Wincanton.

17:05 – Broughshane

Having defeated an improving rival under a positive ride at Southwell last time, BROUGHSHANE may be able to dictate again and make it three wins from four starts in handicap hurdles for Jonjo and A. J. O’Neill.

Ruby Island seemingly retains plenty of ability despite a stop-start career.

She could be a threat from her current mark, while Irish raider Portnacoo, fourth in a big field at Fairyhouse last time, has been a model of consistency this season.
