New Year’s Day ITV Racing tips

13:30 Cheltenham – Broadway Boy
13:45 Musselburgh – Liari
14:05 Cheltenham – Lounge Lizard (each-way)
14:20 Musselburgh – Corrigeen Rock
14:40 Cheltenham – Deep Cave (each-way)
15:15 Cheltenham – Golden Ace

13:30 Cheltenham – Broadway Boy

New Year’s Day’s action starts at Chaltenham and, in here, the form of Broadway Boy at Newbury has already been franked with the horse that finished fifth in that race winning at the weekend. I see no reason to go against Broadway Boy.

I know he’s going to be short but he’s the best horse in the race and the most reliable, too. There’s a bit of rain around but that’s not going to matter to him.

13:45 Musselburgh – Liari

It’s unoriginal, I know, but it’s Liari for me in here. Paul Nichols’ runners have had a bit of a question mark recently but I think that means there’s going to be be better prices about for this horse off the back of that.

He’s won here at Musselburgh before last year and I see no reason to go against him. That race he ran in at Newbury has worked out really well and he was a good third at Chepstow, too.

14:05 Cheltenham – Lounge Lizard (each-way)

I’m a big fan of horses who are already proven at a track and I like Colonel Harry and Jamie Snowden’s in good form as well. There’s just a bit of me that is drawn to Lounge Lizard.

This horse ran a very good race in January 2024 behind Ga Law and didn’t get beaten all that far despite making a couple of mistakes on the way round.

I just feel that now, with that run at Carlisle under his belt a few weeks ago, he’s going to be a player here. He seems to like the track and I’m a big fan of that so Lounge Lizard at a price is a good each-way bet.

14:20 Musselburgh – Corrigeen Rock

Lucinda Russell’s horse, Corrigeen Rock, is a course and distance winner around here. They sent him down to Ascot over 2m5f and he was there for quite a long time, but that was a hot race for his first run of the season. I’m happy to swing with him.

14:40 Cheltenham – Deep Cave (each-way)

I’m going for another each-way horse in this. I went back and watched some of Deep Cave’s wins in France, including a decent hurdle race at Clairfontaine in 2024 on very soft ground, and if you watch him in his previous race at Cheltenham, that was good ground and he kept at it really well having gotten outpaced. He’s running off the same mark Wednesday and, at an each-way price, Deep Cave is not the worst one.

15:15 Cheltenham – Golden Ace

It’s very hard to get away from the form of Golden Ace, isn’t it? The beating of Brighterdaysahead has a lot of people scratching their heads. Jeremy Scott was very honest before the race at Ascot, saying that they’d been struggling with her.

The only concern I’d have is there’s quite a lot of rain around and I’m not convinced she’s an out-and-out stayer. If the rain comes it could open the race right up and you could see a different result then, with the likes of Lucky Place having a chance to turn her over, but the ground is the key here. Golden Ace is the most likely winner if the rain doesn’t make the ground heavy and turn it into a slog.
