NBA Tips: Sunday night’s basketball shots make an 11/1 Bet Builder

Over the past few weeks this column has spoken regularly about the lack of action for this seasonโs NBA Trade Deadline, often wondering whether Miami Heatโs wantaway star Jimmy Butler was the key for the action to start, we even thought this before we went to bed last night.
Little did we know that the Dallas Mavericks and general manager Nico Harrison were planning a trade of biblical proportion to send the shockwave to end all shockwaves through the NBA world. It was reported, initially scoffed at, then confirmed that the Mavs have finalised a trade to send all-world guard Luka Doncic โ along with Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris โ to the Los Angeles Lakers with all-star big man Anthony Davis โ plus Max Christie and just one first-round pick โ coming the other way. As part of the deal the Utah Jazz receive Jalen Hood-Schifino and two second-round picks.
It is one of the biggest and most unexpected trades in NBA history, the fact that the Mavs approached the Lakers out of the blue about trading away their 25-year-old superstar who just led them to the NBA Finals boggles the mind. Circle February 25th in your calendar, thatโs when these two teams will next meet after the All-Star break, and Luka should be fit by thenโฆ
Anyway, there are some NBA games tonight, read on to see what Peter Sharland is tipping.

8:10pm Chicago Bulls @ Detroit Pistons โ Cade Cunningham Over 28.5 points
The Pistons have been far friskier than expected this season and currently sit in seventh in the East. Unsurprisingly a lot of that has been down to the performances of Cade Cunningham, who is more than providing the kind of performances that Detroit would have imagined when they signed him to that mega-contract over the off-season.
Cunninghamโs over/under for this game is 28.5, a figure heโs gone over for four of his past five games. The Bulls are all over the place at the moment and thereโs no reason Cunningham shouldnโt continue his excellent run in this one.
8:40pm Dallas Mavericks @ Cleveland Cavaliers โ Donovan Mitchell Over 24.5 points
There canโt be many tougher tasks for the Mavs in the wake of the Luka trade than travelling to Ohio to face the Cavs. Admittedly, the Cavs have been a bit hot and cold recently, but after a three-game losing skid, they have bounced back by winning three in a row.
They should have too much for the Mavs at the moment despite the weird propensity for Dallas to play better against better opponents. We like Donovan Mitchell to get to his over/under (24.5) even if the Mavericks produce a shock.
8:40pm LA Clippers @ Toronto Raptors โ Under 219.5 points
One of the fun things about the NBA and the fact that it is an 82-game season is that sometimes you get teams toward the bottom of the league going on fun runs. In the West, Portland are 7-3 over their last ten, and out East, the Raptors are on the same run. Toronto is exactly the kind of game where the Clippers have slipped up in the past.
LA are currently sixth in the West and now have to contend with the idea that their in-city rivals have acquired one of the best players in the league (even if the defensive fit is beyond questionable).
We like the under here, neither of these offenses are particularly explosive and both are strong when it comes to defense. The Raptors have kept opponents under 105 in four of their last six, and under 100 in three of those games. The Clippers havenโt been quite as impressive, but their games have still been low-scoring recently, even if James Harden should play this one.
11:10pm โ Boston Celtics @ Philadelphia 76ers โ Jaylen Brown to score 20+ Points
As weโve discussed in this column, the Celtics can be a bit of a weird team to bet on because of the way they spread the ball around. Looking at this one, we like Brown to get over 20 points, something heโs now done for four games in a row. Jaylen Brown has really stepped up as a bucket-getter recently and weโre backing him to stay hot.
Tyrese Maxey to score 25+ Points
On the other side of the court, Tyrese Maxey continues his ascent as one of the best young guards in the league. Maxeyโs over/under here is 29.5 points, and itโs worth looking at the fact that in his last 13 games, he has gone over that figure eight times. In the other five games he either scored 28 or 29 points. If you want to go over for the over here, we wouldnโt hate it, but against the Boston defense, weโre preferring to go for 25+ points to be safe.
