15:30 Musselburgh – Minella Youngy

The biggest factor when assessing this two-and-a-half-mile handicap chase was that there seems, in theory, to be plenty of pace on, and this field of nine could get racing from some way out.

That could favour a hold-up horse, and for that reason, Lizzie Quinlan’s gelding, MINELLA YOUNGY, who last won off a rating of 97 over an extended two miles at Kelso, but has shown that he stays this trip, could well be involved down the long home stretch at the Edinburgh track.

Returning from wind surgery, the seven-year-old ran a race full of promise when catching the eye late on when a never nearer fourth of 10 at Sedgefield in a handicap hurdle off 87 and now gets to race off a mark of just 85 back over fences. The other major factor in his favour is the drying ground, and it could well be nearer good on this very quick drying surface by the official off time of this contest.

Of his rivals, I have the most regard for the top-weight Arctic Ambition, who ran a cracker on his comeback run at Ayr before lack of condition told from the third last, and he was very quickly eased down. He should come on an absolute bundle for that blow out and a rating of 98 looks tempting.

16:52 Lingfield – Card Shark

I have been waiting for the very lightly raced son of Dark Angel, CARD SHARK, to race again following a promising run at Kempton Park last month, and now could be the time to wade in that he has stepped up to a more suitable distance.

That third behind Stella Hogan has been nicely cemented since, albeit at a low level, with the winner being placed twice off a 5lbs higher mark and the second, Cherry King, placed second and then winning last time out.

The selection was given some impossible tasks on his first few runs on the level, running behind two horses now rated 90+ on the flat. But that enabled him to be handicapped off a very low mark at the beginning of his career, and his running on effort at the Sunbury-on-Thames track followed a 243-day spell on the sidelines was more than promising.

So a significant step forward can be expected here, but even on the bare bones of that effort, he should be a leading player in what amounts to a moderate and very winnable contest.

Dubai Honour continues to disappoint for Pat Phelan, which means that the biggest danger could well come from the old boy Mr Trick, who finally showed a bit more spark over the course and distance behind Major Major some three and a half weeks ago.
