Horse Racing Tips: Timeform’s Monday best bets at Hereford feature a 5/1 shot

14:00 – J J Moon
Bumper winner JJ Moon stepped up on his previous efforts over hurdles when runner-up at Wincanton last month, sticking to his task well after a blunder at the second last to make the favourite dig deep. JJ Moon pulled 23 lengths clear of the third at Wincanton and that is the best form on offer here. The continued good form of trainer Emma Lavelle is also in his favour and he’ll have the assistance of champion jockey Harry Cobden in the saddle for the first time, so he looks the one to beat.
14:30 – Duhallow Tommy
Duhallow Tommy took well to chasing last season and completed a hat-trick at Plumpton on his first three starts over fences before having to settle for second behind the reopposing Rath Gaul Hill at Newbury. Rath Gaul Hill followed up at Ayr on his only subsequent start of the campaign and is now 10 lb worse off with Duhallow Tommy compared to when they met at Newbury. Rath Gaul Hill is making his seasonal reappearance but Duhallow Tommy has a couple of encouraging displays under his belt and ran as well as ever when behind only a subsequent winner in Hasthing at Windsor last time, so he gets the vote.
15:00 – Moulins Clermont
Moulins Clermont showed little on his chasing debut and return from nearly two years off at Newbury in November but, upped markedly in trip, he proved a completely different proposition back there last month when finding only a subsequent winner too strong. Moulins Clermont looked a big threat to the winner when challenging after the third last but was unable to sustain the effort, leaving the impression that he may still have needed the run after such a long absence. This drop to an intermediate trip is unlikely to be an issue, he looks well treated off the same mark here and he remains capable of better after only two starts over fences.
15:30 – Clap Of Thunder
Clap of Thunder showed ability in bumpers, finishing placed on three of his four starts in that sphere, and he was a decisive winner at Ascot on his second start over hurdles. Clap of Thunder then shaped better than the result would suggest when fifth in a competitive event at Cheltenham on his handicap debut in November as he was still going well until hampered on the home turn. He failed to build on that promise back in novice company at Chepstow last month, possibly paying for his early exuberance, but he remains with potential and is worth another chance.
16:00 – Famous Clermont
Famous Clermont was ultimately beaten a long way in seventh in the Champion Hunter Chase at Punchestown in May but he shaped much better than that bare result would suggest as he went with plenty of zest and looked likely to finish placed on the approach to the second last only to tire badly. He had a hard race there but that didn’t stop him cosily winning at Stratford four weeks later, again going through the race with enthusiasm. The sort of form he showed when winning the Foxhunters’ at Aintree in 2023 marks him out as the one to beat and he gets the vote on his seasonal reappearance.
16:31 – Drash On Ruby
Drash On Ruby is still searching for a first win but she shaped well when third at Exeter on New Year’s Day, travelling smoothly until a bad mistake at the third last proved costly. That effort showed she has retained her ability after missing last season and she’s on a competitive mark. She gets the vote over State of Fame who stayed on well when third at Taunton last time and will appreciate this stiffer test of stamina.
