Derby

There are two definitions of ‘derby’ in sport. The term originates from the Epsom Derby, a horse race that first ran in 1780. Big horse races – such as the Kentucky Derby and Irish Derby – still use the term to this day. For team sports, a derby is a match where two rivals based closely together face each other. Examples include the Merseyside Derby in Liverpool, and the Old Firm in Glasgow.
