Daniel James anytime scorer

When this man is on song, he is arguably the best player in the Championship. Wales international Daniel James is highly likely to be recalled into Daniel Farke’s starting eleven for this Yorkshire derby, having been rested to the bench in the FA Cup. Even so, he came off the bench and came very close to scoring. That would have been a fourth goal in 8 for the tricky winger.

When Leeds play well, James tends to do so, too. In fact, the Whites are unbeaten all season when James has found the back of the net. This includes a strike in the away meeting played at Hillsborough all the way back in August. The former Manchester United man has also netted in home victories over Plymouth, Luton, Middlesbrough and Oxford.

Despite having his injury problems across the campaign, he is still ranked third-highest league scorer for Leeds, with only Joël Piroe and Brenden Aaronson managing more.

He does, however, top the squad in relation to the highest number of attempts on target in league action. 42.22% of his overall shots have worked the goalkeeper, whilst 31.58% of those have actually led to goals. This is a clinical finisher if presented with the chance and Sheffield Wednesday will find it tough to keep him at bay.

Brenden Aaronson 1+ shots on target

Another player given a breather for the Harrogate FA Cup match was USA international Brenden Aaronson.

He was an unused substitute in his case, and the break would have done him good having played virtually every minute across the season for the Elland Road club. He’ll be nice and refreshed to get back in the swing of things. He is their second-highest Championship scorer, so he certainly knows where the back of the net is.

The expectation is for Leeds to enjoy a fair amount of control and domination in this contest. The Owls will be quite content to get bodies back behind the ball, but that will invite pressure. Someone like Aaronson thrives on matches like this, where he can utilise his clever movements to locate pockets of space in and around the final third.

Only twice in his previous 10 appearances has the attacking midfielder failed to record a shot on target. During this period, he has averaged 2.20 shots per match, proving he is quite simply a very live and frequent goal threat at this moment in time. Getting the ball into him in advanced areas is one obvious way of Leeds creating the chances they need to win this match.

Yan Valery to commit 1+ more fouls

Someone who Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl rarely does not call upon is defender Yan Valery. The Frenchman has practically played every match this season when available to do so; such is how highly thought of he is.

Facing Leeds away, this is a particular clash where he will have an important role defending the wide areas. Leeds are so strong in their winger department, and Valery’s pace is one weapon that will give him a shot at winning his respective battle on the pitch.

However, there are undoubtedly going to be times when he comes off second best, meaning he’ll either be forced or accidentally commit a foul or two.

The soon-to-be 26-year-old has form in the book in that respect. In the FA Cup tie versus Coventry last time out, Valery committed a total of three fouls. The match did go into extra time, but this was the joint second-highest amount of fouls he has made in any match this season.

This is a player that is especially foul-prone in away matches. Only in two of his last nine played away from Hillsborough in league and cup has the full/wing back failed to make at least one foul. There is no question Leeds will put him under pressure at times, and it’d be a major shock if those on the road fouls did not continue on Sunday.

Leeds, Over 5.5 corners

Something Leeds can be relied upon to successfully do is to win a lot of corners.

A major reason for this is that they generally dominate most games they play, so the opposition is often forced to sit back and soak up pressure. When that is the case, earning corner kicks is just a by-product of that level of control. The theme should continue on Sunday.

It was only a week ago United claimed a total of 11 corners in their FA Cup tie versus Harrogate. Of course, there is a two-division difference, so that wasn’t a huge shock. Tactically, this game won’t be so different, however.

At Elland Road, they really lay it on the opposition, and with them so strong out wide, that will also improve the prospects of earning more and more corners. Over Leeds’ last 18 games in all competitions, they have earned six or more corners in 14. That cannot be a coincidence.
